Pretend play at 2

A spoon that becomes a phone is work. Your job is to join for a minute, then let the plot stay theirs.

CDC milestones by 18 months includes playing with a toy in a simple way, such as pushing a car, and copying chores. CDC milestones by 30 months includes pretending with objects. Those are the rungs. A banana as a phone is not cute extra. It is the 30-month idea in a kitchen.

You do not need a play kitchen that costs a week's groceries. A bowl, a spoon, a washcloth, and a stuffed animal will do. The child is rehearsing your day. That is why they put the baby to bed with your exact sigh.

Join, then shrink. If you take over the plot, it becomes a show. If you never join, they miss the words. One sentence is enough: The baby is tired. Then wait.

Try this

  1. Keep a small box of real objects that are safe to copy: cup, scarf, notebook.
  2. Copy their action once, then pause.
  3. Name feelings in the play: the bear is mad. The bear needs a rest.
  4. Let them stop mid-story. Plots at 2 do not need third acts.
  5. If they want you to be the dog, be the dog for one minute. Then return to making dinner.

Screens can show pretend. They cannot sit across from the child and drink the invisible tea. That is why an hour of media, if you use it, still needs your face. The better default is the bowl.

Chores are pretend's cousin. Wiping a table, putting socks in a basket, walking a toy vacuum one foot behind yours. CDC keeps copying chores on the 18-month list for a reason. Hand them a cloth. Accept a damp floor.

In the house this month

A child who puts a bowl on their head is still pretending. You do not have to correct the plot. You can name it: a hat. Then wait to see if it becomes a bowl again.

Copying your chores is a compliment and a mess. Hand them a safe piece of the work. If you need it done well, do it later. This pass is for them.

If pretend includes hitting the baby doll, pause and show gentle. That is behavior and play in the same minute. You do not need a new toy. You need the sentence and a model.

Screens that pretend for the child leave nothing for the spoon to do. Keep the spoon. Keep the hour small.

Skip correcting the plot. Skip a play kitchen you cannot afford. Skip screens that pretend for the child.
